Holograms: Dynamic Element of Multi-Layered Security

  • January 13th, 2015

As you know, last week we attended the County Sheriffs of Colorado Exhibitors’ Show! The star of the show was one of our newest products, the Holoview® ID. The name comes from a unique feature of the ID, a personalized holographic panel, which is immune to replication. According to Professional Security Magazine Online, the key to success in 2015 will be the ability of holograms to become an intrinsic part of flexible, multi-functional security.

HologramWhy are Holograms Important?

Holograms are part of a family of technologies known as diffractive optically variable devices (DOVIDs). They exhibit a variety of complex images and patterns according to the viewing angle (i.e.- if they are tilted or rotated), based on the diffraction of light. Holograms cannot be copied by conventional copiers or scanners and their effects cannot be reproduced or simulated by standard printing techniques. While holograms are essentially overt features that can be recognized and verified by the public, they can also be integrated with other security technologies – inks, taggants, numbering, RFID, etc. – to provide multi-layered security solutions with track and trace capabilities.

Multi-Layered Security is Crucial to Stay Ahead of Criminals

Now, more than ever, it is crucial to feature multi-layered security in your ID cards. Ian Lancaster, the general secretary of the International Hologram Manufacturers Association (IHMA) says, “Anti-counterfeiting technologies will grow as the criminal masterminds get more sophisticated every year, and the security printing industry needs to expand capabilities using multiple technologies to remain ahead.” The Holoview® ID does just that, by incorporating a variety of overt and covert technologies to create a barrier that is highly resistant to duplication. The ID provides an authentication solution that allows examiners to quickly determine whether the card is genuine or fake.

Having a well-designed authentication system can save your company time and money. If you’re not already utilizing ID cards with multi-functional security features, this is a great time to evaluate how these technologies can benefit your organization.
