Have you heard about New York’s new municipal ID program that rolled out last month? The card, called IDNYC, is beneficial for all city residents, but will be especially useful for vulnerable communities, such as the homeless, youth, the elderly, undocumented immigrants and others who may have difficulty obtaining other government-issued IDs.
Numerous Benefits for Cardholders
The IDNYC card boasts a long list of exciting benefits, including discounts on movie tickets, prescription drugs, fitness and health centers, supermarkets and New York City attractions. It is also accepted at a number of banks in the city to open a bank account. Best of all, individuals with the IDNYC card are eligible for a one-year free membership package at 33 of New York’s leading cultural institutions, including world class museums, performing arts centers, concert halls, botanical gardens and zoos! The ID program is free for New Yorkers who apply in 2015 and the cards are valid for five years from the application approval date.
Program Streamlines City-Wide Services
Although it seems like the perks are only for the cardholders, the IDNYC program also assists the police department and other government agencies. Since the card is accepted as an official form of identification, it helps the NYPD better interact with citizens and allows them to issue a summons or desk appearance ticket, rather than conducting an arrest. In addition, the card is also accepted:
- By City agencies to access many services and programs
- As a library card for all libraries city-wide
- For entry into public buildings, like schools
- For taking the high school equivalency exam in New York City
The IDNYC program is a great example of how a city can help its residents, while streamlining its processes. Through this effort, New York is better connecting various services and encouraging cardholders to explore the wonderful cultural attractions the Big Apple has to offer them. Has your city or government department considered implementing a similar program? If so, share your thoughts and experiences below!
