What does TWAIN Compatible Mean?

There are two major types of cameras, standard and TWAIN compatible devices. The difference between these is how they interact with other computer software.

For example, if you were to take a photo with a standard camera, you would first have to save it to the computer, convert it to the correct format, and then import it into the ID badge printing software to add it to the badge being printed. This process is quite inefficient, takes up additional time, and can easily result in errors due to the extra steps.

TWAIN compatible cameras help you skip all those unnecessary steps by pulling the image directly into the ID badge software. No need to save the image and format it. Just take the photo and it will appear directly in the badge printing interface.

Further, you don’t lose any functionality that you’d have with a standard camera. For example, TWAIN compatible cameras will project real-time images into the badge software, so you can see how the picture will look before you take it.

Which TWAIN Compatible Camera Should You Choose?

When choosing a TWAIN compatible camera you have several options. Some of the more common ones are regular webcams as well as higher end brands, like ValCam. Let’s consider webcam-type devices first.

Webcams are a typically less expensive, and can range from about $79 to $500 in price. They are quite affordable and are a good choice for many types of situations. For example, a web cam can be used in settings where:

  • The area is well lit and reduces shadow on the individual’s face.
  • The camera can be positioned closely to the person whose picture is being taken (2-3 feet away).
  • There is no rush to process ID badges (like employee on-boarding)

However, webcams have several drawbacks in other instances. This is where ValCams can be a much better choice. ValCams are more expensive, but have more high-end features, such as the ability to zoom in and out, and can produce high quality images even in poorly-lit situations. Some of these cameras can even be used to take a photo of the individual across the room. As such, ValCams provide distinct benefits in unique settings

For example, correctional facilities can benefit from ValCams because corrections officers performing the intake process can keep a greater physical distance away from inmates. This is absolutely vital because it gives officers more time to respond if an inmate takes an aggressive action, and prevents the inmate from reaching for the equipment to cause damage.
