As part of our ongoing commitment to providing the best technology and education to our customers, we’d like to use this opportunity to share another installment about a featured ID printer brand. This month, we’ll tell you all about Zebra printers, and some of the amazing features Zebra ID printers have to offer.

Let’s take a look at some of the great features and printer models in more detail!

Portable Zebra Printers

Zebra offers several printers that are light weight and are perfect for organizations that need to move the printer around a lot. Here are just a few:

  • ZXP Series 1:  This ID printer from Zebra is quite small, just under 12 pounds, but it packs a big technological punch. It is a single sided, direct-to-card printer with a whopping output of either 545 monochrome cards per hour, or up to 130 color cards (that’s about one card every 30 seconds!). It even comes with optional magnetic stripe encoding.
  • ZXP Series 3 – Single Sided:  Priced under $2,000, this Zebra printer is a very economical solution. It comes standard with a 2 year warranty (and 1 year loaner printer coverage). At 12.2 pounds, it’s a bit heavier than the ZXP Series 1. However, it offers optional lock, to secure the card hopper and prevent unauthorized use. ZXP Series 3 also has optional mag stripe encoding, contact and contactless MIFARE encoding, and Ethernet connection!
  • ZXP Series 3 – Dual Sided:  This model is very similar to the single sided version in the standard features, as well as optional add-ons. However, this ZXP 3 printer can print on both sides of the card at the same time, which is invaluable for situations where both sides must be customized. (By contrast, if one side of your cards has standard information, there’s no need to get a dual sided printer. Just pre-print the standardized text on a batch of cards ahead of time.)

Small Footprint

In addition to portability, the smaller size of the printers mentioned above also gives them a small footprint. In fact, many customers who purchase these Zebra ID printers end up placing them at check-in counters or for venues like hotels and parks.

Such a small footprint can increase the amount of usable space on the user’s desk. But more importantly, it creates a very clean, crisp look for the check-in area.

High Capacity Zebra ID Printers

When larger print jobs need to be completed, there are several Zebra ID printers that can achieve high volume without compromising on quality. Mainly, these are the Series 7 and Series 8 models, which are specifically designed to handle the robust needs of large quantity printing.

  • ZXP Series 7:  This model uses the direct-to-card printing method, where the print-head layers the pigment directly onto the card surface. This model has a single sided and a double sided version, both of which come with a two year warranty. In terms of quantity, this model can produce an astounding 300 single sided color cards per hour (that’s one every 12 seconds!).

The ZXP Series 8 printers are equally impressive, but use the retransfer printing method. This means they first render the image on a clear film, which is then applied to the card. There are several benefits to this:

  • Retransfer methodology allows for over-the-edge printing, which eliminates the thin white around the edge, which is typically left behind by the direct-to-card method. In this way, over-the-edge printing creates a stronger branding message.
  • Further, retransfer printing typically results in images that are more vivid. By applying the ink to the clear film first, a higher level of granular visual detail can be achieved.

Additionally, both of these Zebra printer models come with optional lamination options, which can significantly extend the useful life of the printed ID card. This lamination capability and high capacity printing options make the Series 7 and Series 8 printers a perfect choice for high volume settings, like schools and large organizations.
