We’re looking ahead to all of the amazing industry events that our ID Edge team is attending this year! This got us thinking about the importance of the name badge. The optimal badge or badge deck is functional and visually pleasing; it provides attendees with the information they need, without overwhelming them with every detail. Think about how the user will be interacting with the badge throughout the event and tailor it to their needs. Here are some important factors to consider when designing your conference badges:
Clarity
The badge-wearer’s name should be clearly printed and in a large font, so that it can be read from a distance. Often times, the conference title or sponsor’s logo overshadow the person’s name, making it difficult to identify the individual. Also consider including information about the organization that they are associated with, their role at the conference, and their social media information, if applicable to your event. Encouraging attendees to engage online is a great way to keep the conversation going once the activities are over.
Wearability
Think about how people will be wearing and interacting with their badges. This is where comfort and functionality go hand-in-hand. You want to ensure that the lanyard you select is comfortable for both men and women. Removable badge holders or adjustable lanyards may be necessary for people to easily read content. Also think about using a double point attachment method, rather than single, to prevent badges from flipping over. If you opt for a single point attachment, though, consider printing the badge holder’s name on both sides, so that it is always visible.
Sustainability
Over the last five years, there’s been a growing focus on sustainable products and practices. With that in mind, choose your materials based on the nature of your event. For example, a single-day event may not require plastic badges, since the use will be so minimal. Consider using a paper badge instead. If you have a longer event that requires the use of a plastic badge, why not use recycled cards? They’re environmentally friendly and biodegrade faster than traditional cards. Another eco-friendly solution is bamboo lanyards. If you’re hosting a recurring event, collect the lanyards at the end of each one and reuse them the next time. This will ensure you get the most value out of your investment.
Considering all of these factors will help you design a badge that is easy-to-read, functional and sustainable.
